An opportunity to discover culinary taste treats popular in the 1890's awaits the visitor to the Queen's Parlour Tea
Room, located in the area of the Castle which was originally occupied by the greenhouse.
When the Tea Room was in the planning stages, Victorian menus from regional hotels were studied and authentic recipes were collected. From this research of the 1890's culinary arts, the
Tea Room's menu was designed. Choices include molded gelatin dishes known as "gelees", bread pudding, cobblers with fresh fruit and lemonade made with Manitou Springs mineral water. (Castle Cookery, available in the gift shop on the fourth floor contains some of these authentic recipes.)
For many years, the kitchen was staffed by volunteers who arrived at 6 a.m. several days a week to start baking the varieties of breads and rolls enjoyed each day. Patrons were served on the canopy-covered terrace until 1994, when a major renovation totally enclosed the dining area and freed it from the whims of Colorado mountain weather changes.
