Stop 2 of the tour: The Grand Drawing Room
The Drawing Room earns its Grandness through its size and contents. The huge fireplace on the wall has more than 200 tons of rock in its chimney. The fireplace wall is backed 78 feet into excavations of the mountain. The sheen in the gold-painted ceiling comes from real gold mixed with the paint!
The Grand Drawing Room's furniture and coat of armor were donated to the museum. The Victrola (which still works) plays 78 rpm records. It is a "Model 250 Diamond Disc" player and was built about 1900. Other musical instruments on display include an Autoharp and, in the music alcove on the left, a W. P. Emerson piano built in Boston in 1870.
Behind the Grand Drawing Room's desk is the kitchen for the Queen's Parlor Tea Room. Originally, the kitchen was a greenhouse with a glass ceiling. Today, you can enjoy the views and pleasant breezes while enjoying a glass of lemonade with strawberries or a cup of hearty homemade soup.
